One of our deputies is OK after being struck by gunfire today during an ongoing situation on Old Georgetown Road near McClellanville. Please continue to avoid this area.
Deputies arrived at a home in the 8400 block around 11 a.m. to serve an arrest warrant for failure to register as a sex offender when a subject opened fire and barricaded himself inside. No one was injured in the initial gunfire. Since then, additional shots have been fired periodically.
At one point, a deputy was hit. EMS treated the deputy on scene for an injury that is not life-threatening.
The Sheriff’s Office helicopter, SWAT team and crisis negotiators are on scene with the subject still inside the residence.
Deputies have escorted residents from nearby homes and blocked off surrounding roads for the public’s safety.
