HAMLET, N.C. — In a surprising and controversial outcome following Hamlet’s November 4th municipal election, mayoral candidate Ray Mills reportedly received only 62 votes, according to the official tally.
However, a source familiar with the election process has informed The Daily Counter News that earlier results from the October 7th election period told a much different story — showing Mills with 201 votes, just 29 votes behind incumbent Mayor Amy Quinn. The alleged early data, which was reportedly collected before Election Day, was never released to the public, raising new concerns about transparency and election reporting within the city.

Also surprising were the Hamlet City Council election results, where prominent and widely expected winner Esco Latimer was reported to have received only 160 votes in the November 4th count. Many community members and observers have expressed disbelief at these numbers, considering Latimer’s strong visibility and public support leading up to the election.
Given these unexpected results, questions are emerging about whether a recount should be conducted or if behind-the-scenes activity may have influenced the outcomes. Election watchers note that candidates have until 12 p.m. tomorrow to formally request an official recount, which could help clarify whether the discrepancies are clerical errors, data reporting issues, or something more concerning.

In a related development, it has been stated that renowned journalist, author, and filmmaker Sean Patrick Smith of Hamlet has announced his candidacy for the upcoming 2027 City Council election. Mr. Smith has been outspoken in his criticism of how town matters have been handled and, following the outcome of this election, has declared that it is time for him to enter the political arena to challenge what he described as “the old guard of Hamlet.”
As tensions rise and scrutiny increases, residents await clarity from local election officials. The Daily Counter News will continue to monitor developments closely and provide updates as they unfold.
