Last night, the City of Hamlet held its first political candidate debate, offering residents the chance to hear directly from those vying for the roles of Mayor and City Council. Moderated by local columnist Shawn Smith, the debate maintained a neutral tone while allowing citizens to press candidates on key issues.
Three candidates participated: Ray Mills, running for mayor, and Dr. Amber Daniels and Esco Latimer, both seeking seats on City Council.
Water concerns dominated much of the discussion. Mills pointed out that Hamlet has received millions in grant funding over the years earmarked for water system repairs and improvements, yet the city continues to face ongoing water quality and infrastructure challenges. He called for a full public accounting of how those funds were allocated and pledged to ensure future resources are used to directly address the problem.
Latimer, a Marine Corps veteran, echoed those concerns, noting that residents are frustrated with the lack of transparency surrounding the city’s water system. He emphasized the need for clear communication and accountability, arguing that citizens deserve to know why long-standing problems persist despite years of funding.
The city budget was also a focus of debate. Audience members raised questions about whether current council leadership has misused funds, particularly in relation to grants and budget allocations. Both Mills and Latimer supported the call for increased transparency in city finances, while Daniels highlighted her professional background in accounting and finance as a key strength she would bring to ensuring oversight and fiscal responsibility.
Residents who attended in person and those who tuned in via Facebook Live praised the debate format, saying it gave citizens a rare chance to directly question candidates about pressing community concerns. Many suggested that such events should become a regular feature in Hamlet’s political process.
With water issues, budget transparency, and questions of financial accountability at the center of the evening, the debate underscored the growing demand among Hamlet residents for openness and responsible leadership as elections approach.
