Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott confirmed Tuesday that his office has received a formal request from Blythewood Mayor Sloan Griffin for an independent investigation into allegations raised by the Blythewood Town Council.
According to Sheriff Lott, the request arrived via email from Mayor Griffin around 12:45 p.m. The mayor requested that the Richland County Sheriff’s Department (RCSD) review documentation outlining the allegations made against him.
“We will look over the information provided and determine whether the circumstances rise to the level of a criminal investigation,” Sheriff Lott said in a statement.
Details of the allegations have not yet been released publicly. The mayor’s decision to request outside review follows heightened tensions within Blythewood’s town government in recent weeks, as the council has raised questions regarding Mayor Griffin’s conduct.
Sheriff Lott emphasized that RCSD’s role at this stage is to review the materials submitted before deciding if a full criminal inquiry is appropriate.
Town officials have not provided additional comment as of Tuesday evening.
