Richland County Deputy Involved Shooting at 300 Block of Ovanta Road

The Richland County Sheriff’s Department’s critical incident team is investigating the shooting involving a deputy that occurred today.

Today, Tuesday, August 26, 2025, just before 10:00 am, deputies were dispatched to reports of shots fired at the 300 block of Ovanta Road. Deputies were informed that a man was shooting in the vicinity of construction workers located in front of his residence. Witnesses stated they heard multiple gunshots, then saw the man standing outside with a firearm.

When deputies arrived on scene, they made contact with the suspect through the window of his residence and requested that he come to the door to speak with deputies. The suspect was not compliant and began making threats towards deputies. Deputies retreated from the front of the residence to take cover and continued to call out to the suspect. A short time after, the suspect pointed a gun at deputies through the window of the residence.

A deputy fired once, striking the suspect. Deputies immediately entered the home to render medical aid to the suspect. Deputies rendered aid until EMS arrived and transported the suspect to a local hospital. The suspect succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. No deputies were injured.

Sheriff Lott identified the deputies involved as Corporal Shawn Sullivan, who has been with RCSD for 9 years; Deputy Mason Boney, who has been with RCSD for 2 years; and Deputy Christopher Miller, who has been with RCSD for 1 year.
