Richland County Deputy assaulted In Sandhills Update

UPDATE: Sheriff Leon Lott says new information provided shows that the initial large crowd began to form at the Plex Sports Center in Sandhills before being dispersed by deputies and moving towards the movie theatre.

News Release: Deputy Assaulted While Responding to Fight in Sandhills

Sheriff Leon Lott announces the arrest of a 16-year-old juvenile after assaulting a deputy during a fight that broke out between several individuals in front of the movie theatre in Sandhills.

On August 2, 2025, at approximately 9:00 p.m., deputies responded to the intersection of Town Center Plaza and Promenade Place in Sandhills for a large crowd forming. Dispatch advised that the caller possibly saw a firearm presented as well. When deputies arrived on scene, the large crowd was actively fighting in front of the movie theatre in Sandhills. Deputy Woolever attempted to break up the fight when the 16-year-old juvenile picked her up and slammed her on the concrete.

Deputy Woolever sustained injuries to her head, shoulder, and hip from the assault. She was taken to a local hospital, where she was diagnosed with a concussion and monitored for swelling in her hip. She was released from the hospital later in the evening.

The juvenile was located by deputies and transported to the Department of Juvenile Justice. He is being charged with Assault and Battery 2nd Degree and Breach of Peace of a High and Aggravated Nature.
