ASGDC GUARD ARRESTED AGAIN

Sheriff Lott announces the arrest of Wendell Sholar (DOB: 01/27/92), a guard at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center for Assault and Battery High and Aggravated Nature, Assault 3rd Degree and three counts of Misconduct in Office.

Wendell Sholar

On Jan. 18, 2024, Sholar was assisting several guards trying to control an inmate. The inmate was handcuffed at the time. Sholar dragged the inmate up the stairs; slammed him up against the wall and proceeded to punched him several times with a closed fist. Sholar was restrained by other guards and removed from the inmate’s cell. Sholar was placed on leave the following day and has been on leave since.

While RCSD investigators were working the above incident, they discovered a second incident that occurred on Oct. 17, 2023. Sholar was struggling with an inmate, and shoved him in his cell and onto his bed. At that time he repeatedly punched the inmate several times in the head and upper torso. Guards immediately intervened and removed him from the cell. Sholar attempted to reenter the cell and continue to assault the inmate, but the other guards prevented this. While Sholar was being escorted away, he tried to start a physical altercation with another inmate by grabbing him by the collar and shoving him.

In both incidents, guards were present and immediately intervened when excessive force was used.

Sholar is charged with Assault and Battery High and Aggravated Nature, Assault 3rd Degree and three counts of Misconduct in Office. He is currently booked into the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center awaiting a bond hearing.

“We will continue to hold those accountable whether they are inmates or correctional officers,” Sheriff Lott said. “The law applies to everyone.”
