Sheriff Leon Lott announces the arrest of 20-year-old Jaylon Veerapen for the July 10 murder of Stephen Wilson.
Deputies responded to the 3800 block of Lester Drive for reports of a shooting just after 11 p.m. on July 10. Deputies located a 27-year-old man suffering from gunshot wounds. Deputies attempted to provide medical care, but he died at the scene.
Investigators determined that Veerapen encountered Wilson while walking on Lester Drive. There was a brief conversation between the two men, then Veerapen fired shots at Wilson, striking and killing him.
Investigators believe that Veerapen and Wilson were known to each other. This is an on-going investigation.
Veerapen was charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. He was booked into the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center on July 25.
