A man living in Sumter County has pleaded guilty and been sentenced to 10 years in prison for the Sexual Exploitation of Minors.
On February 8, 2022, Malcolm Rainey pleaded guilty to one count of Sexual Exploitation of a Minor, Second Degree and one count of Sexual Exploitation of a Minor, Third Degree before the Honorable Judge George McFaddin in Sumter County, SC.
On November 16, 2015, an investigation of online distribution of child sexual abuse material was conducted by Kevin Atkins of the SC Attorney General’s Office. During the investigation, Inv. Atkins identified a user of an online file-sharing program who had made files available for download that contained images of minors engaged in sexual activity or appearing in a state of sexually explicit nudity. Investigators traced the user to a home in Sumter County where Rainey lived at the time. On February 2, 2016, an investigator from the SC Law Enforcement Division executed a search warrant on the home and seized multiple electronic devices. Additional files of child sexual abuse material were located on Rainey’s devices. During the investigation, Rainey confessed to the SLED investigator.
While out on bond, Malcolm Rainey, a British citizen, fled the country and returned to the United Kingdom. Prosecutors with the South Carolina Attorney General’s Office coordinated with Interpol, the U.S. Department of Justice, and The County Court in Northern Ireland to locate, detain, and extradite Rainey back to South Carolina.
Judge McFaddin sentenced Rainey to the maximum 10 years in prison for Sexual Exploitation of a Minor, Second Degree, and the maximum 10 years in prison for Sexual Exploitation of a Minor, Third Degree. Those sentences will run at the same time. The regional Enforcement and Removal Office of Immigration and Customs Enforcement was advised of Rainey’s presence and conviction for the purpose of initiating removal proceedings after he serves his prison sentence. Upon his return to the United Kingdom, Mr. Rainey will have to register as a sex offender.
