Mother and Son Arrested After Armed Robbery

Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott announces the arrest of a mother and son after a robbery at a nearby gas station.

Today, July 13 around 2 a.m., deputies responded to reports of a robbery at the CK Mart located at 2624 Broad River Road. It was reported that a man wearing a McDonald’s uniform entered the store, stated that he had a gun and threatened the clerk. During a review of the surveillance video, it was found that the man stole several lottery tickets and left the scene.

Shortly after, the vehicle seen on camera at the gas station was located at the McDonald’s at 1729 Broad River Road. Deputies made contact with the manager, Simeko Thomas (DOB 11/30/81), who refused to let deputies in or cooperate. She then locked the door, keeping all employees inside.

The robbery suspect was seen inside of the restaurant with other employees. RCSD’s Special Response Team responded to the McDonald’s after the robbery suspect was barricaded inside and Simeko Thomas refused to let deputies in or employees out. After negotiations, the employees were let out and deputies entered the building, taking Simeko Thomas into custody. She was charged with Obstruction of Justice.

The man involved in the robbery, Direko Thomas (DOB 12/16/02), was found hiding in the attic and was taken into custody as well. He was charged with Armed Robbery and Larceny. Both individuals were booked at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.
