It has come to the attention of the Daily Counter that a State Bill is trying to be passed that would start erasing history requirements from our schools and children. H4760 https://legiscan.com/SC/bill/H4760/2019 would remove testing of students on the subjects of Social Studies and U.S. History. This House Bill is sponsored by House Representative James Lucas (R) and co-sponsored by 6 other Representatives.
As our schools are always a subject of interest we find the fact that Representatives want to further dumb down our children. Several aspects of our schools are slowly being chipped away that we grew up with such as the Pledge of Allegiance, Cursive Handwriting, and several life teaching classes. Now it is proposed that we further remove our own history from schools.

Representative Lucas made this statement on Twitter: “A frequent grievance I heard from teachers across the state last year was excessive assessments – this bill directly addresses that.“
A question you can ask yourself is: Are these the same teachers who wanted a $15 an hour pay raise? I wonder if Representative Lucas ever had complaints about too many teacher days off during the school year?
Representative Lucas received a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science from USC in 1975 and then received his Master’s Degree in Public Administration in 1981. And currently only sits on the Operations and Management Committee as Ex. Officio Member.
Perhaps Representative Lucas has never heard the phrase ‘Those who do not learn history are doomed to repeat it. ‘ A phrase coined by writer and philosopher George Santayana. This one single phrase has been repeated by Leaders from around the World including Winston Churchill. Representative Lucas may want to remember that History helps us to understand change, and how our society has developed to its current standard it also allows us to remember times such as the Holocaust of World War II and hope not to repeat those mistakes.
House Education Committee Chair Merita Allison (R) (who is a co-sponsor on this Bill) is allegedly working on an amendment to set the record straight and that de-prioritizing history is no this bills purpose.
An outspoken House Representative against this bill is Jonathon Hill (R) who stated in one of his writings:
“The establishment spinmasters are accusing me of lying, and saying they “aren’t removing history” while doing that very thing.”
“Speaker Lucas and his establishment cronies are trying to turn our education system into a well-oiled machine to chug out workers for the big corporations they lure to the state with your tax dollars.”
“Let us never forget. Let us never repeat the tragedies of history. And let us always, always remember both the lessons and the triumphs that make up America’s story.”
Today’s education system is lacking many of the traditional classes that we had growing up. These classes gave our children a chance at learning a career path, but now we seem to be producing simple laborers with no ambitions beyond flipping a burger.
Social Studies and History are perhaps if not just as important to a student as math or science. We show this by having such as Black History Month, Irish Fests, and Octoberfest’s that give us and our children a taste of the old days.
Perhaps this is why we see homeschooling on the rise in our education system. More parents are lacking faith in our School and opting to teach their children at homes or home school programs due to the lack of actual education in our schools.
With the birth of the internet our worlds have become Global and classes like Social Studies and History give our children a leg up. I am reminded about Pink Floyds song “Another Brick In The Wall” which shows children being cookie cut into mindless beings. This is what House Bill 4760 would begin.
As a parent I always tell my sons to question everything and to learn everything, you never know when something might come in handy. And to always look to history so you don’t make the same mistakes as others did.
It may be true that this bill does not fully remove history or social studies from our classrooms but it does remove the need for students to learn these fundamentals. This journalist fully agrees with Representative Hill to stand against H4760.
