STOLEN VEHICLE RECOVERED AFTER CHASE

Around 4:40pm today (4/25/24), a stolen Dodge Charger was seen on Hwy 601 in Lugoff. The driver of the Charger failed to stop when your KCSO deputies turned on blue lights. A chase ensued south bound on Hwy 601. The suspects exited Hwy 601 and attempted to hide the vehicle behind a house. They were seen by an off duty Elgin Police. Three subjects then ran from the vehicle.

KCSO K9 Kilo was put on their tracks. Within 5 minutes, Kilo apprehended all three suspects. One 17 year-old suspect and two adult suspects were taken into custody without any injuries. The driver had a handgun in his pocket when deputies located him.

Incident at Lower Richland High School


Sheriff Leon Lott announces the arrest of a 16-year-old male student from Lower Richland High School.

Today, March 1, 2024 a 16-year-old student attempted to rob another student while at Lower Richland High School.  A fight ensued and both SROs tried to break up the fight.  The 16-year-old struck one SRO in the face and actively resisted being detained, causing the other SRO to dislocate his shoulder.  The SROs utilized their taser to subdue the suspect and he was placed under arrest.

The SRO who was struck has been released from the hospital, while the other SRO is still being treated at the hospital for his shoulder.

The 16-year-old has been charged with Strong Armed Robbery and two counts of Assault on a Police Officer while Resisting Arrest.  He is currently housed at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center in the juvenile wing.

“This will not be tolerated,” Sheriff Lott said. “Our SROs are in school to protect the students, teachers and staff. This is not what school is about. We will hold those accountable who assault other students and our SROs.”

News Release: Incident at Lower Richland High School

03/01/24

On March 1, 2024, around 12:00 p.m., two RCSD deputies working as School Resource Officers for Lower Richland High School responded to an incident where there was reportedly a fight on campus. Upon arriving, deputies observed an altercation and attempted to subdue the individuals. While attempting to break-up the fight, both SROs were assaulted by a student. The student was detained and both deputies were transported to a local hospital for their injuries.

This is an ongoing investigation, more details will be provided as they are made available.
